Only a small minority of alleged rapists are eventually convicted and receive a custodial sentence (Gregory & Lees, 1996). The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 recognised the existence of male rape victims, for the first time, by including anal as well as vaginal penetration within its definition. Since 1991, husbands can be charged and convicted of the rape of their wives.
